The best swimming locations in Townsville

January 20, 2021

Are you visiting Townsville or maybe you are looking for an escape, below are some of the best swimming holes North Queensland has to offer. Do you have any recommendations on other swimming locations we should check out, contact us and let us know.

1.  Big & Little Crystal Creek

Crystal Creek is a beautiful creek in North Queensland. Its crystal-clear water is ideal for a refreshing swim tucked away in nature. Little Crystal Creek is well known for its old stone arch bridge built in the 1930s and the cascading waterfalls that feed into one of the most pleasing freshwater swimming holes in the North. Take a dip into the refreshing waters of Crystal Creek when visiting North Queensland.

Big Crystal Creek is only a short drive from Little Crystal Creek if you want to go even deeper and explore a little further. With a huge swimming hole, a vast picnic area big enough for your whole family, a natural slip 'n' slide, camping sites (permits required), and plenty of nature to explore around Big Crystal Creek.

2. Rockpool, The Strand

At The Strand Rockpool, you may unwind in a stinger-resistant seawater pool. The rockpool is conveniently located on the north side of The Strand (Townsville), close to several amenities, including toilets, tables, public barbeques and more. The Strand Rockpool is an ideal spot for a picnic or barbeque and cooling off! A gently sloping swimming area provides excellent wheelchair access that leads into a deeper swimming area perfect for those wanting to swim laps.

3. The Strand Beach

The Strand is Townsville's most popular beach and foreshore. The beach, which is 2.7 kilometers long and faces north-east toward Magnetic Island, is the place to be this summer. Close by are ice cream shops, playgrounds, cafés, and restaurants, making The Strand Beach the perfect location for relaxing by yourself, with friends or family.

4. Riverway Lagoons

Located in the Riverway Precinct, the Riverway Lagoons are over three times the size of an Olympic swimming pool, giving you plenty of room to relax without feeling crowded. Riverway Lagoons are perfect for all ages and protected all year round to ensure safe swimming. You will also have a stunning view of the Ross River from here.

5. Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island has a variety of fantastic swimming locations. Arthur Bay is the ideal area for a low-noise holiday. It's encircled by granite boulders and hoop pines, as well as some of the most beautiful coral in close proximity to shore but don't forget your snorkel gear.

Horseshoe Bay is a fantastic location to spend some quality time with the family. It's a favourite destination for water sports, swimming, and family fun. You'll be sorry when you have to leave!

Picnic Bay offers some of the most beautiful beaches and a secluded atmosphere. Snorkelling in Picnic Bay is great, but from above, you may see what you can find while strolling along the pier.
